Dan Dascăl, BT AM: We doubled our equity funds in one year

Dan Dascăl, CEO of BT Asset Management, was a guest on the show"Cu cifrele pe masă"(With the numbersonthetable), produced by Termene.ro. The full discussion can be viewed here, and below are some statements from the interview:

About BT Asset Management's performance

  • The equity funds managed by BT Asset Management doubled in value in 2025.

  • We have seen an upward trend in assets managed by BT Asset Management for many years, and the market continues to show great potential, given that the cumulative assets of investment funds in Romania are still at a low level relative to GDP and household deposits, compared to other countries.

  • The results we have achieved would not have been possible without our constant investment in the development of digital solutions. Our investment funds are available directly in Banca Transilvania's BT Pay app, and any user of the app has immediate access to these funds in a simple and user-friendly way.

  • Today, over 90-95% of the operations carried out in our funds—thousands of transactions every day—are performed digitally.

About risks and opportunities in the investment market and in the economy

  • One group that had a tougher time than us last year was entrepreneurs. The risks will probably be greater for them this year too. We can see that consumption has fallen, taxes have risen, and VAT has increased. They may have to be much more careful this year and face greater risks than we do.

  • From an investment perspective, I have no reason to be pessimistic about this year, either in Romania or in the region. After all, I don't see any major events that could negatively influence market developments. Of course, it would be unrealistic to say that we expect the same growth rates as last year, but I see no reason for a decline.

  • We will probably continue to see volatility in the markets, but if we look at things over a sufficiently long horizon, volatility is absorbed by the markets. If we look back over the last five years alone, we have had a pandemic, war on the border, trade war, periods of volatility, and yet returns are in the double or triple digits.

  • For Romania's economy, access to European funds represents an important opportunity that we must capitalize on. Another opportunity is Romania's potential in the area of energy resources. This is an asset that we already have, and the trend is encouraging.

  • From an investment perspective, I believe there will continue to be opportunities. There are areas where there is still room for growth. If we look at Europe, the automotive sector has not performed well in recent years and may have growth potential. Similarly, I believe that the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors also have potential for appreciation. We can also identify opportunities in the food & beverage sector and in other segments that may not have been in the spotlight, unlike technology, but which remain essential for the functioning of economies.
